The Capital Region River Valley Park’s Plan of Action is for a regional-scale, 88 kilometre long park along the North Saskatchewan River that will serve the people in Edmonton’s Capital Region on a year-round basis. At 18,000 acres in size, it dwarfs New York’s Central Park (700 acres) and Vancouver’s Stanley Park (1,000 acres). Seven River Valley Alliance municipalities share the vision of protecting and enhancing the Capital Region’s river valley and turning it into one of the best and largest integrated metropolitan parks in North America.
ParioPlan’s contribution to the Plan was land securement research, land use policy review and stakeholder consultation. Implementation, a key component of the Plan, builds on past work done to protect natural areas as well as to establish and maintain attractions, facilities and recreation opportunities in the river valley. The Plan sets out a realistic vision and achievable path to protection and enhancement while the opportunity still exists. Plan implementation received a strong boost in 2008 with a $50 million commitment from the Province of Alberta.
